Ever since day one I’ve had the iPhone. Between then and last November, I’ve gone through at least 5-6 iPhones, including the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G. Finally after about 2 years, I got pretty bored with the iPhone and started looking for something new. After looking around and researching a bit, it came between the Palm Pre and the new Motorola Droid. I ended up going with the Motorola Droid since a lot of my co-workers and friends were fond of the Android operating system. After visiting the Verizon store and playing around with the phone for a bit, I too had a good feeling about the system.

The phone itself is great, I loved the keyboard (it was nice to be able to use a physical keyboard as opposed to the virtual one provided in the iPhone), the size was decent as well. It ran pretty smooth and quick and if I recall I never rebooted the device or had it lock up on me for any reason. A huge plus to the Android system was they had an application for Google Voice. I’m sure you’ve all read or heard about the big fiasco that Apple, Google and AT&T had when Google attempted to release their Voice app on the iPhone. Anyways, it worked pretty well on the Droid.

Besides the Google Voice application there were a couple others which I found useful. There was an SSH application which I used to remote login to my various servers, another application to grab my RSS feeds from my Google Reader account, and another application which pulled down the lastest FMLs from the fmylife.com website. Of course, the application library for Android users just didn’t seem to compare to the one Apple provided. It seemed to be lacking any really decent apps. Most apps were pretty ugly and sometimes a chore to use. In fact, the Facebook application that comes with the phone, was absolutely terrible. I ended up using the touch.facebook.com site more often then not.

My next big gripe is designing wallpapers for the droid is a nightmare. While I certainly appreciate being able to have a wallpaper set on the desktop (whereas on the iPhone this is not possible) it was not easy to make. Because the Droid has 3 desktops, you need to create a wallpaper for that full size (960x854px in case you’re wondering). Now since I really only used the middle desktop (the default one) I had to make sure whatever image I was using, the main figure or design was located just right so it showed up aligned correctly in the middle desktop. Eventually I sort of gave up and just started putting images together in hopes they would work, half the time, they did, the other half…not so much!

The Droid is a very nice phone, don’t get me wrong. It’s just not the phone for me. After using it for about 3 months or so, I finally gave in and got myself another iPhone. This time, I went with a white, 16GB phone. I also got these nifty anti-glare screen covers and I quite like how it looks. I haven’t really tried out any of the new features, like the compass, or video recording, but I definitely plan on making a few movies! As always, it’s a snap setting up my email accounts, calendar and contact syncing. Being that I have both a Mac and a MobileMe account sure helps. While I haven’t gotten quite back into the groove of using the virtual keyboard, it’s definitely not an issue at the moment. I’ve also paired the phone with the hands-free Bluetooth “device” in my car and even after leaving Bluetooth and 3G on for the entire day, there’s only a very small sliver of battery that has been used.

Of course having an iPhone now, it’s just not nearly as cool as having one 2 years ago…
