Projects

These are most of the projects I’m working on.

Horse.13 is basically our network. Everything runs under this network. Everything is a “production of the Horse.13 network”. At present it’s really just the network name with a domain name. All servers use the domain in the hostname (ie. palomino.horse13.com, percheron.horse13.com). The domain was originally purchased for a project in one of my web design classes but has stuck around since.

Macintosh-Admin – This is a project I started with one of my best friends while working at Small Dog Electronics. We basically wanted it to be a repository of snippets and tutorials that we found to be using or found useful while working with Mac OS X Server and the Apple Xserve. I mostly put it together and integrate things between WordPress and bbPress. I write articles there from time to time, but a lot of the content was put together by my friend.

Scribbld is one of my larger projects, my baby. It uses the LiveJournal source code as it’s platform. It’s definitely not anything like setting up or using WordPress. However after seeing the LiveJournal team was offering up the source code to anyone I knew I needed to run it. After spending a bunch of time researching it and getting a friend who knew a lot about Linux to install RedHat and the needed modules I finally had the site up and running (however under a different domain). That site ran for a couple years and then I shut it down. Scribbld was born in July of 2007. It was built in a VPS which ended up being a bad idea. I eventually had Scribbld running on 3 web servers and 1 database server, however it has been toned down to one server now (which is more then powerful enough for the user-base at the moment). Presently the site needs a couple large fixes, however time constraints has prevented me from really getting them done.

SceneJournal is my next baby! It’s the original name and domain that ran the LiveJournal source back in 2004. Unfortunately we had to shut down the site and lost the domain. Fortunately we secured the domain once again as well as a new dedicated server. We’re using the Dreamwidth code-base this time (which is built off and greatly improved from the LiveJournal code). It’s an invite-only site at the moment, and has under 100 users at this time. This is where I keep my my more private journal. I haven’t made many codebase updates to SceneJournal again because of time constraints.

RocketShipz is at present just a domain we use for testing out new software which may be later implemented into new websites. This domain is the creative child of Morgan Westfield.

GermanShepherdz is a new project (6/2010) of mine. It’s the product from my love of the German Shepherd dog. It’s built using WordPress, bbPress and BuddyPress. The site is a social networking hub for enthusiasts of the breed. I actually went out and purchased and spent some good time on getting it working the way I wanted too. It does need a couple more things, I just have to get them implemented.

Confessh.us is a project which started as a dream. Morgan Westfield wanted to show the world she could code, and she definitely did. We went from idea to a functional website within a month or so. It was built using custom PHP code, WordPress and bbPress. Let me tell you, integrating WordPress + bbPress is one thing, not so hard, but when you toss in your own custom made, built form the ground up website into the mix, it definitely brings the challenge. I do feel we successfully did it though. The site definitely needs some bug fixing and such, but for 1 month I think we did a great job. I lent a hand in database design and some of the PHP coding.

jimmyhasablog is this site! It’s my blog for the world to see. It mostly contains articles about video games, technology, or other random things in life. It’s built using WordPress (duh)!

jimmyhasadog is a blog which I use to keep track of all my dog happenings. While I don’t have a dog yet, this blog has videos, pictures, and articles about other dog related things I’ve been up to. I work at the Houston SPCA so often I have pictures from there and such. However once I get a dog, it’ll mostly be about him or her.

Movie Rental Script – I actually hope to be able to show people a demo of this soon. I built it for a friend in Vermont who allows his customers to rent movies from his store. It’s 100% custom built using PHP & MySQL. The basic components allow you to Add New Customers, Rent and Return Movies and keep a database of movies.

Gator Full Disk Monitor – I can’t actually show this script because it’s locked down to the network at HostGator. I can explain what it does though. It allows me and co-workers to track what servers we’ve submitted tickets on for servers with full hard disk drives. Basically it helps in that we won’t be stepping on each other toes and will know which servers have been looked at (so we’re not duplicating each others work). It allows tickets to be marked as resolved once they’ve been taken care of. This script is also 100% built from the ground up using PHP and MySQL. It also utilizes yShout so we can leave each other quick messages.

Other client projects:

TinyMeat.com was originally a Vermont based company. The owner had stopped into Small Dog one day when I was working and I was telling how cool his wallet and iPod case was. He then mentioned his company made them and needed some web work. We instantly became friends and started working on his website. It was (and I believe still is) WordPress/bbPress and OSCommerce based.

Green Mountain Fire and Hammer / VT Blacksmith – is a website which I built for my farrier back home in Vermont. It has handed over to another web designer/maintainer since then. I basically customized the WordPress theme to fit his business and built the site from that.
